Eagles fans memorialize Super Bowl win with new tattoos

Eagles fan Dan Morgan got a tattoo to memorialize the team’s Super Bowl win

In Philadelphia, where America’s founding fathers famously signed the Declaration of Independence, locals are now using ink to commemorate another important part of the city’s history: the Eagles’ first Super Bowl title.

Since Philadelphia’s 41-33 upset of the favored New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII on Sunday, many Eagles fans have posted pictures of their new tattoos on social media.

Eagles fan Dan Morgan wanted to memorialize the Philly Special – the game’s unforgettable trick play in which quarterback Nick Foles was on the receiving end of a touchdown pass from tight end Trey Burton.

But instead of having an image of a wide-open Foles becoming the first quarterback in Super Bowl history to catch a touchdown, Morgan went for an equally simplistic and creative approach: he had the play diagrammed on his forearm.

‘It took only about an hour to complete,’ Morgan told NJ.com about the Xs and Ox that now dot his inner arm. ‘I went to Headlight Tattoo in Westville. I called around noon to see if they could take a walk-in.

‘It seemed like most people either were adding on a Lombardi trophy or just getting something including it,’ he continued. ‘I wanted mine to be less obvious. Random people are going to see it and maybe take a minute but many will get it.’

Morgan was right about other tattoos being more obvious.

One fan, Michael Long, had a tattoo artist design a shot of Nick Foles raising the Lombardi Trophy while looking out over the city from atop the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps made famous in the ‘Rocky’ movies.

Teddy Munz, a 38-year-old English teacher from New Jersey, had his tattoo artist copy a picture of Foles hoisting the Lombardi Trophy after the game.

‘I always thought sports tattoos were cheesy,’ Munz told ESPN. ‘But this one is cool. It’s the guy who started the season as the backup quarterback.’

Back on December 11, when starting quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a season-ending knee injury, Munz agreed to get a tattoo if Foles could lead the team to its first Super Bowl title.

Munz friends played their part as well, pulling together funds to cover the $400 cost of the tattoo.

Although he was taking a calculated risk by offering to get tattooed if the Eagles won a Super Bowl with Foles under center, Munz was still making a smart bet. He already had 30 tattoos, or so, and he was happy to get another if it meant the Eagles could win their first NFL title since 1960.

One Patriots fan did not bet as wisely.

Northeastern Student Eddie Ferrini prematurely added ‘LII’ to his running list of the Patriots’ Super Bowl victories that are tattooed on his back, near his right shoulder.

‘I’m pretty confident they’re going to win,’ Ferrini told CBS Boston before Sunday’s game. ‘I mean, my friends have always thought I was nuts.’

Ferrini may have made been wrong on Sunday, but as he pointed out on Instagram, his ill-advised tattoo can be salvaged if the Patriots win Super Bowl LIII next season by simply having a vertical line etched alongside his ‘LII.’

However, if New England can’t win its sixth Lombardi Trophy next year, he may be out of luck as it is far more difficult to convincingly turn ‘LII’ into ‘LIV’ or any of the succeeding Roman numerals.
