Models don conservative cuts on the David Jones runway

On Wednesday evening, ambassadors Jessica Gomes and Victoria Lee led models down what was for the most part a very dark, edgy and season-appropriate David Jones Autumn/Winter 18 Collections runway in Sydney.

But among the bold black and grey palettes, over-sized suits and crisp highly structured designs were an array of fiercely feminine and conservative designs stamped with florals, lace and pretty pastels.

Among the pieces were cutesy lace-embellished pieces by Zimmermann and Alice McCall, high frilled necklines, countless maxi dresses, over-sized pastel trenches, Poppy print dresses by Thurley and felt jackets by Marcs.

The model in Valentino paired her lace dress with a showstopping $11,099 leather trench by the designer.

The feminine designs broke up what was largely a darker, edgier runway theme – the campaign aptly named ‘Take the Leap’.

High necklines, frills, florals, pleats and pastels were recurring themes throughout the night despite an overarching edgier vibe

The theme was designed to inspire people to ‘challenge the boundaries of their personal style, break through their reservations, step up to the edge and leap into something new’.

As a result, the designs were divided up into four succinct categories – ‘Night Garden’, ‘Strong Suit’, ‘New Classic’ and ‘Steal the Show’.

According to David Jones’ Director of Clothing and General Merchandise, David Collins, the new season showcases the new bold trends on offer for the ‘milder’ months.

‘The autumn winter season is all about finding different ways of expressing yourself. We’re asking people to push their boundaries and take the leap in a new direction,’ he said.

‘A strong injection of colour and prints including stripes and checks feature heavily in this season’s buy, meaning there has never been a better time to add some flair into your wardrobe.

‘With striking colours such as emerald green, fuchsia and bold red making up the palette for the season, it is a move away from the traditional muted, dark tones we see on the runway at this time of year.’
