This is the dramatic moment a brave fireman saved a cat from certain death after a luxury multi-million-pound yacht went up in flames in an upmarket marina.

The frightened animal was snatched as it teetered on the edge of the 30ft boat which had docked in Alicante, Spain.

At first, it looks as though the black and white cat is totally oblivious to the danger it is in and looks more worried about the fireman who climbed up the ladder to try and reach it.

At one stage, the cat seems to be thinking about jumping overboard but is grabbed in the nick of time.

Ten people had to be taken to hospital after trying to put the fire out before the arrival of the emergency services.

It is believed the fire in the yacht, worth a cool six million euros, started during some welding work in the engine room but a full investigation is underway.

The flames spread so quickly that the workers started to choke as they inhaled smoke.

Firefighters had difficulty in controlling the blaze because of the fibreglass bodywork and difficulty in accessing the engine room. The operation is likely to continue today to make sure the flames do not spring up again.

The cat survived it's terrifying ordeal. It is not known whether it was a stray or whether it belonged to someone on the yacht

The alarm was raised at around 10.30am on Tuesday morning and a crew of 21 firefighters rushed to the scene.

Water and foam was used to try and control the flames and it was during this that they realised there was a cat on board.

The ten men who needed hospital treatment were aged between 20 and 49. Nine of them were taken by a fleet of ambulances to different hospitals in Alicante and were all discharged later.

A huge crowd gathered to watch the drama in the Alicante port in the district of San Gabriel and the thick plume of smoke was visible from miles away.

The fire crew used more than a million litres of sea water to control the blaze.

The cat survived but it is not known whether it was a stray or whether it belonged to someone on the yacht.

Reports in some of the Spanish press say it ran away after being rescued.
