Southwest Airlines jet slides on taxiway in Maryland

A Southwest Airlines jet slid on a taxiway while preparing to take off from Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) Airport on Wednesday, but no injuries were reported, officials said.

The incident happened shortly after 10 a.m. Eastern and involved Southwest Flight 906, a Boeing 737 bound for Montego Bay, Jamaica.

The aircraft remained on the pavement, according to officials with the airport and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Light, freezing rain was reported at the airport early on Wednesday by The National Weather Service.

But airport spokesman Jonathan Dean said airfield pavement temperatures were above freezing at the time of the accident.

Dean added that 75 flights had departed earlier in the day from the same runway Flight 906 was using when it slid on its way to the runway.

This comes as Winter Storm Liam has brought a mix of snow, sleet, ice and rain to the northeast.

Freezing rain had accumulated up to nearly one-quarter inch in western Maryland on Wednesday, as well as in northern West Virginia, southwestern Pennsylvania, around the Cincinnati metro area, and in other parts of southern and eastern Ohio, The Weather Channel reported.

A small amount of ice accumulation was also reported on elevated surfaces in parts of Washington, DC, New York City, Philadelphia metro areas, and in Harrisburg, Reading and Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday morning.

It wasn’t just ice, either, making a mess of things on the east coast.

Parts of New York and Pennsylvania saw nearly 9 inches of snow by late Wednesday afternoon, while parts of Ohio and Vermont saw 7 inches, or slightly more.
