A man who reported finding a woman’s dead body in the desert near Phoenix 30 years ago has now charged with killing her.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office arrested 55-year-old Donald Lee Scott in the murder of Anne Marie Levee in December 1988 due to a DNA match,
In 1988 Scott called the Sheriff’s office to report that he and an unidentified friend had found a dead body while driving through the Arizona desert southwest of 99th Avenue and the Carefree Highway.
The medical examiner’s office would later conclude that Levee had been sexually assaulted and was shot several times.
Detectives followed up on leads but did not progress far in their investigation, learning only that Levee was last seen with a white man with brown hair and a mustache in a maroon car.
In 2003 the case was re-opened after scientific advances were made and a DNA sample was taken.
In December 2016, a report came in that there was finally a match.
A DNA sample provided by Scott in 2014 – when he was convicted of aggravated assault and served time in state correction – matched semen found in Levee’s vagina.
Upon further investigation, detectives found Scott had an extensive criminal history of arrests for weapons, stalking, assault, harassment and attempted sexual assault, per court documents.
According to the documents, once the Department of Public Safety (DPS) lab was notified of the match, detectives sent Scott’s DNA sample to the lab to confirm it was indeed a match.

DPS confirmed last month it was Scott’s DNA found on Levee’s body 30 years ago.
Police arrested Scott at his Glendale home on Frudat Court documents show Scott denied raping and killing Levee but could not provide any explanation on why his semen was found with her body.
Scott is being held in the 4th Avenue Jail on suspicion of a felony count of first-degree murder and a felony count of sexual assault in lieu of $1 million bond. Court records don’t list an attorney who could comment on the allegations.
The court documents also revealed that ‘multiple eex-girlfriends’ have accused Scott of stalking and harassment and he is the subject of both an order of protection an an injunction against harassment.
