Mass brawl on Melbourne’s Chapel Street

A man who was knocked unconscious during a sickening mass brawl was left on tram tracks for 30 minutes after a group of thugs fled the scene.

The 30-year-old was found on Prahran’s bustling Chapel Street after officers were called to the violent clash among around 20 men at about 1am on Thursday.

He was taken to Alfred Hospital with facial injuries and remains in a serious condition, while two men, both aged 29, suffered minor injuries.

The brutal fight began outside a venue before spilling onto the road where it disrupted traffic, detective Senior Constable Katie Johnson said.

‘People have taken it upon themselves to start punching and kicking other males,’ she said.

Other groups then became involved, ‘to jump in for their friends’, she said.

The cause of the fight is not yet known, but CCTV footage showed a group of men fleeing from the fight past Prahran Town Hall and onto Greville Street.

Police are investigating whether there were two specific groups involved and if the three injured men had been aggressors or victims.

Const Johnson said officers at the scene were particularly troubled by the state of the unconscious 30-year-old, who is from the south-eastern suburbs.

‘It’s quite brutal. The man was unconscious for a significant period of time,’ she said.

‘Obviously that’s a concern to us, that someone could just leave him like that.’

Anyone who witnessed the incident or recognises anyone in the footage is urged to come forward.
