Alaeldien Ahmed , 27, randomly stabbed father-of-four Anthony Banting to death at a tram stop in Birmingham in an unprovoked attack

A paranoid schizophrenic calmly walked away from the scene after stabbing an innocent father-of-four to death in an unprovoked attack.

Alaeldien Ahmed randomly attacked Anthony Banting at a tram stop in Winson Green, Birmingham on March 31 last year, stabbing him 60 times.

He then walked away from the scene, leaving the much-loved father bleeding to death on the pavement.

Ahmed, 27, from Eva Road, Winson Green, was cleared of murder but found guilty of manslaughter by diminished responsibility by a jury at Birmingham crown court after a two week trial.

The brutal and unprovoked attack happened at around 4.40pm after 57-year-old Mr Banting left the tram stop in Winson Green to meet his son at a nearby pub.

The court heard that Mr Banting had been stabbed around three minutes after getting off the tram.

Ahmed then left the scene and a passer-by found the seriously hurt Mr Banting.

Emergency services were called and paramedics worked tirelessly to save him.

However, despite their best efforts he died at the scene.

After an investigation by British Transport Police’s Major Crime Team, forensic evidence placed Ahmed at the scene of the shocking attack.

Mr Banting’s blood was found on both of his attacker’s shoes.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Paul Langley said: ‘Mr Banting did not know his attacker; he was an innocent and law-abiding citizen who was heading to meet his son at a local pub in Winson Green.

‘His family have been left devastated by the actions of a man he had never met before.

‘In the space of a few minutes, Mr Banting sustained 60 stab wounds.

‘The viciousness and brutally of this attack is deeply shocking.

‘We’ll now work with the courts to ensure that the right sentence is handed down to his attacker.

‘Ahmed is a violent and dangerous individual and it is essential he receives a tough sentence which ensures he cannot bring tragedy to another family.’

Ahmed will now be sentenced on March 9.
