A Minnesota school bus driver has admitted to driving drunk with at least 50 children on board.

Thomas R. Bromen, 63, has been charged with three gross misdemeanor counts of drunken driving.

The bus driver from Sauk Centre allegedly ran a red light and missed multiple stops while dropping off children on Monday, according to the Star Tribune.

Police got three calls about Bromen’s driving. Two were from day care providers who said he had skipped their stops, and the third was from a truck driver saying Bromen had run a red light.

Bromen refused to take a roadside sobriety test, but did tell officers he was drunk.

When he was given a breathalyzer test at the police station more than three hours after he reported for work, his blood alcohol level registered at 0.16, twice the legal limit.

However, commercial vehicle drivers have a legal limit of .04 percent, and bus drivers break the law ‘when there is physical evidence present in the person’s body of the consumption of any alcohol.’

Fortunately no children were injured. The students all came from the high school, junior high, elementary school in the district and Holy Family School.

Sauk Centre School District has fired Bromen, who drove for the district for six and a half years.

He remains in jail on a $4,000 bond.
