Crime spree ends in jail term for 20-year-old drug addict

A 20-year-old woman’s spectacular fall from grace was complete after she was jailed for 50 offences including leading police on chase that involved the air wing.

Chloe Harris was jailed for 31 months by Magistrate Ron Saines in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court in Victoria on Wednesday, The Standard reported.

Five years ago Harris was competing in horse jumping and looked to be a happy and healthy teenager, a far cry from where she finds herself at 20-years-old.

Harris had already spent 203 days in custody prior to the hearing and Magistrate Saines said she would spend another year in custody before being eligible for parole.

Chloe Harris, 20, was sentenced to 31 months jail after facing 50 charges in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court

Harris is a repeat offender and had been in police custody since November, 2017, as a result.

In 2016 Harris was charged with trafficking ice and ordered to complete 200 hours of community service which she did not complete.

She also refused to take part in a court ordered road safety awareness course and did not undertake any rehabilitation or other treatment programs.

Not deterred by already being charged for trafficking ice, Harris’s crime spree continued when she began to commit more serious crimes.

In January of 2017 Harris stole a car from Geelong, Victoria, before being involved in a high speed police pursuit which included the air wing of the police, Harris crashed the car and tried to flee on foot before being apprehended by officers.

Once again Harris thumbed her nose at the law when she was bailed out and failed to appear at her court hearing.

Warrants were issued for Harris’s arrest and during her time on the run, from May to to June of 2017, she committed a further 11 offences, including using stolen hire cars to smash through the windows of retail stores.

She also admitted to being having involvement in the theft of a stolen hired Holden Caprice, worth $70,000.

When police were finally able to track Harris down she again tried to flee before being arrested with more than $2000 in cash in her possession.

Harris would again be released on bail and again started to traffic ice which Magistrate Saines said was made all the more brazen because Harris was on bail at the time.

Magistrate Saines said during the sentencing that it had become a matter of community safety that Harris be jailed for a term.

Defence counsel Michelle Downs argued that Harris’s regular offending was a result of her heavy drug use.

It’s expected that Harris will appeal the sentence.
