CCTV captures dozy thief rummaging through car

This is the moment an inept thief rummaged through a car without noticing two well-lit CCTV cameras beaming down on him only to be startled by a security light after he’s raided the vehicle.

Jon Saddington, from Hull, says the man took a pair of sunglasses, a greeting card, three pairs of gloves and a rucksack containing a Stanley knife and safety glasses from his vehicle.

After the incident in East Yorkshire, which happened as Mr Saddington slept, the 37-year-old posted the clip on social media, warning people to keep an eye out for the thief.

It captures the moment the man is startled by a security light, after he has rifled through items in the vehicle.

Writing on Facebook, Mr Saddinton said: ‘Watch the video for the moment he finally realises there’s a CCTV camera staring straight at him! Not exactly a criminal mastermind.

‘Keep your eyes open and your car locked.’

Mr Saddington said the man tried his partner’s car before moving on to his unlocked vehicle.

The thief tentatively tries the door handle after failing to gain access to the other car on the drive, unaware he’s being recorded

‘When I came to the car in the morning, I realised someone had been through it,’ he said. ‘It seems he is oblivious to the cameras.

‘I had a greeting card, he took that. It had been written. Two pairs of gloves and a rucksack in the boot.

‘There was a scarf worth £30. He decided not to take that.’

Mr Saddington said the greeting card taken from his car was a thank-you card and included about half a dozen pictures of his baby son in its design.

He then moves on to the rear door and has a rummage through the back of the vehicle, before making off with a meagre haul

‘Obviously he’s not the brightest,’ he said ‘We have a couple of cameras and they both light up and he’s not noticed either of them.

‘I was annoyed with myself for leaving the car unlocked. It’s made me a bit more conscious.’

Mr Saddington said the middle-aged man was wearing a distinctive hat and looked like he may have had a tattoo of a tiger on the back of his neck.

A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: ‘Investigations are underway following a theft from a motor vehicle on Beverley Road, Hull at around 1.20am on Thursday, February 8.

‘A number of items were stolen in the incident including sunglasses, gloves and a sports bag.’
