Directions at SA/NT border leave drivers baffled

  • A road sign on the border of the NT and SA has left residents baffled
  • The sign on the Stuart Highway plots a route from Adelaide to Darwin
  • It has confused travellers who say it leads drivers in the wrong direction

A road sign on the border of the Northern Territory and South Australia has left residents baffled with its apparent twist on conventional geography.

The sign on the Stuart Highway at the border of the two states is for travellers heading north towards Darwin, and plots a route from Adelaide through Port Augusta and Alice Springs.

It has confused some people however with its placement of Adelaide at the top of the planned route with Darwin at the bottom.

There is another sign near the same spot for drivers travelling in the opposite direction from the Northern Territory towards South Australia.

The signs bear South Australian tourism logos, together with the hashtag #explorersway.

Outback resident Gillian Fennell told the Advertiser she believes the mapped route is incorrect.

‘Heading towards Darwin you see this sign on the left hand side of the road,’ she said.

‘So you are driving towards Darwin, but the map on the sign clearly shows you driving towards Adelaide.’

A South Australian Tourism Commission spokesman said the signs are ‘not maps’, and aimed to ‘highlight the experiences South Australia is renowned for’.

‘The signs are not maps, they are part of a suite of marketing material intended to get people who are on a road trip to spend longer in our regions,’ he said.

‘The signs indicate the linear journey of the touring route from start to finish. You start a journey at the top and work your way down to the end.

‘The touring routes are a key component of our tourism offering, encouraging visitors to explore our regions and therefore pumping important dollars into local communities.

‘The signs have been installed to show where the routes start and finish, to create awareness of the routes and to encourage people to explore our regions.’
