Eight people injured after being hit by ute in Melbourne

Seven children and one adult have been injured after being truck by a ute after it slammed into a traffic light in Melbourne Friday afternoon.   

Emergency services were called to the scene at Pakenham, at the intersection of Cardinia Road and Princes Highway just after 3.30pm.

Ambulance Victoria revealed a woman in her 30s was in a serious condition, while the children were all treated for minor injuries. 

Police are in the hunt for the male driver, believed to be in his 20s and of Pacific Islander or Maori appearance, who left the vehicle and fled the scene on foot before officers arrived.

The woman received chest, back and shoulder injuries and was taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition.

A primary school aged girl was taken to Royal Children’s hospital in a stable condition with abdominal and leg injuries.

Five other primary school aged girls received cuts and grazes, with three taken to Dandenong hospital and two taken to Monash Medical Centre.

He was believed to be of Pacific Islander or Maori appearance, and aged in his mid 20s with a solid build with black afro style hair.

He was last seen running west on Princes Highway wearing a dark blue t-shirt and long black pants.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
