The figure skating competition is arguably one of the most popular events in the Winter Olympics, thanks to the unbeatable combination of killer choreography, incredible skill – and of course, the sensational ensembles.
Unlike any other event in the 2018 Games, athletes in the figure skating competition are allowed to wear individual looks, rather than being limited to a specific uniform, meaning they have the opportunity to get truly creative with their ensembles – a chance which most excel at every time they step onto the ice.
Athletes from every country, and in every event of the competition, from the individual short program to the pairs performance, have brought their all to the ice in every regard, including upping the style stakes.
From La La Land-inspired looks to a bridal gown, there has been no shortage of sassy sartorial moments to rival even the most spectacular of spins.
Here, FEMAIL rounds up the most celebrated styles seen on the ice in Pyeongchang thus far.
PAIRS
Hollywood-inspired: Russian skaters Kristina Astakhova and Russia’s Alexey Rogonov dazzled in their La La Land-themed outfits, which set the mood of their routine paying tribute to Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s hit movie
Can you see it? Alexey and Kristina’s costumes were so reminiscent of La La Land that some social media users have deemed the male figure skater a Ryan Gosling lookalike
Cerulean: French figure skater Vanessa James looked absolutely striking in her blue, embellished cut-out dress, which contrasted nicely with her partner Morgan Cipres’ simple all-black outfit
Ensemble: Morgan’s black shirt had a small rectangle of blue fabric echoing the hue of Vanessa’s dress
Contrasts: China’s Peng Cheng donned a dazzling red dress with a large back cut-out (filled with a nude fabric panel as per her sport’s rules). Her partner Jin Yang went with black pants and a white shirt, keeping the ensemble from being over-the-top
Angles: The red dress was equally striking in the front and in the back, with no shortage of embellishments
Impressive: Keeping figure skating’s bejeweled costumes tasteful can be a challenge, but Germany’s Bruno Massot and Aljona Savchenko rose to the task with their purple tie-dye outfits, which looked romantic rather than cheesy
Swan-like: China’s Yu Xiaoyu looked absolutely ravishing in her white ensemble, complete with an elegant feather headpiece tucked in her low bun. Her partner Zhang Hao wisely let her costume take center stage
Neutral: The white dress was adorned with grey embellishments that brought the outfit together in a harmony of soft hues
Good choice: American siblings Maia and Alex Shibutani wowed in red and black. Maia’s dress, with its knee-length tulle skirt, accompanied her every move during the free dance event
Tribute: While figure skating doesn’t require athletes to wear uniforms, some still manage to pay homage to their country thanks to their outfits, as US athletes Maia and Alex Shibutani did with their red ensembles
Feeling the love: Germany’s Annika Hocke and Ruben Blommaert’s outfits went full-on romantic with their grey and pastel pink costumes decorated with sparkly embellishments. The flowers in Annika’s hair finished off their combined look perfectly
I do! Anna Cappellini of Italy brought an air of bridal chic to the ice in her gorgeous, short-sleeved white dress with a lace bodice, while her partner Luca Lanotte played it retro in black suspenders over a beige shirt
A nice change! When it comes to darker huers, figure skaters often go with black, but American married athletes Alexa Scimeca Knierim and Chris Knierim rocked touches of navy blue, from Chris’ entire outfit to Alexa’s dress embellishments
Them again! Alex and Maia Shibutani of the US also rocked amazing costumes during the free dance event, with Maia looking dazzling in her fuchsia dress with touches of coral, while Alex proudly donned a bejeweled top
Elegant: Sometimes, keeping things simple works, as evidenced by Canada’s Meagan Duhamel, who rocked an ice skating version of the little black dress while her partner Eric Radford went for matching pants and a coordinated shirt
Time travel: Germany’s Annika Hocke’s cut a vintage figure in her flapper-style costume with a bejeweled collar, with her partner Ruben Blommaert completing their joint look in an embellished shirt with mesh sleeves
WOMEN
Graceful: Russian athlete Alina Zagitova looked just like a ballerina in her tutu-inspired red costume with golden touches and matching opera gloves
Silhouette: On the ice, Alina, who is just 15 years old, looked just like a ballerina with her hair pulled into a simple low bun
The outfit of victory: Mirai Nagasu of the US became the first woman to land a triple axel during the Olympics while wearing this now-iconic red bodysuit encrusted with tiny crystals
Details matter: Canadian skater’s Kaetlyn Osmond’s short black gloves brought her entire outfit to a whole new level
Details: In the front, Kaetlyn’s outfit combined sparkly embellishments with touches of mesh and a plunging neckline
Dazzling: French skater Mae Berenice Meite stunned in this golden bodice paired with black pants to form a striking outfit
MEN
Expert: There are certain things only US skater Adam Rippon can pull off. This red and black outfit with embellishments is one of them
Regal: Keeping things simple can sometimes lead to underwhelming outfits, but China’s Jin Boyang cut an elegant silhouette in his understated black costume with just a few embellishments
Pulling it off: Japan’s Shoma Uno’s grey and black outfit with sparkly touches is the embodiment of figure skating chic
Bodysuit: Russia’s Mikhail Kolyada’s graceful figure was highlighted by his two-toned, black and white costume
Minimalist: Malaysia’s Julian Zhi Jie Yee’s black pants and white shirt combined to form an outfit so simple it became daring
That’s a style: Not everyone could pull off Ukraine’s Yaroslav Paniot’s lace-up sleeves, but he certainly could
And what have we learned? Denis Ten of Kazakhstan demonstrated once again that sometimes simple is really the way to gfo
Golden touch: Matteo Rizzo of Italy’s black costume was made dazzling simply thanks to the embellishments on his jacket and around his wrists
Previously: Before he rocked his red and black costume, Adam Rippon also represented the US in this dazzling printed shirt, wisely paired with simple black pants
