  • Cristiano Ronaldo has a better goals average per game than rival Lionel Messi
  • The Portuguese’s 0.86 goals per match average edges out Messi’s 0.71 total
  • Ronaldo’s efforts have been boosted hugely by his Champions League showings
  • His 11 goals from seven matches produces a mammoth 1.57 goals per game

For Real Madrid this season, it has so far been a disaster and by far the worst for Cristiano Ronaldo since he joined the club.

But even when the tide has been against Madrid, Ronaldo is still a winner with a better goal scoring record than La Liga top scorer Lionel Messi this season.

A return to form in recent weeks has bolstered the Portuguese’s tally and from the 29 matches played this season, he has scored 25 goals, working out to an average of around 0.86 goals per match.

Barcelona star Messi, however, has scored 27 goals from his 38 matches this term, which gives him an average of 0.71 goals per game.

For those wondering where Barcelona striker Luis Suarez sits, the Uruguayan has 19 goals from 24 matches giving him an 0.55 per game average.

It should be stressed that Ronaldo has played nine games fewer than his fierce rival but it does go some way to suggest talk of a Cristiano crises may be wide of the mark.

Domestically the Messi has a record of 0.83 goals per match which is marginally ahead of Ronaldo’s 0.81 average.

The Champions League has been a crucial competition for the Los Blancos icon as without the goals here, Ronaldo would find himself below the Argentine.

In seven matches in this season’s tournament Ronaldo has contributed 11 goals, this averages at a staggering 1.57 goals per match.

In that 11 included a crucial brace against Paris Saint-Germain at the Bernabeu last week as the tournament holders earned a 3-1 first leg win over the Ligue 1 side to boost their hopes of progression.
