American kids try Australian snacks for the first time

Who says Australia doesn’t have a national cuisine? 

Vegemite, Picnic bars, Burger Rings, Freddo frogs – these are all cornerstones of the Australian food pyramid.

But they’re certainly not for everyone. Just take a look at a recent video, in which a handful of American kids sit down to sample some of the iconic Aussie snacks.

The clip, titled ‘Kids Try Snacks From Australia’, was uploaded to YouTube via HiHo Kids – a popular channel that sees a variety of boys and girls testing out a variety of foods, drinks and activities.

And the first Australian snack out of the gate, of course, is Vegemite. 

‘Vegemite… is it spicy?’ asks one young girl before trying sampling a minute amount on her toast. ‘I don’t really like it but the toast is delicious’ she decides.

‘It tastes like rainbows and unicorns’ says another girl, before going on to declare, in what might be the most astute observation of the entire video, that ‘It’s sour like soy sauce’.

Burger Rings don’t taste like burgers, it was decided; Freddo received a unanimous thumbs-up; and the Picnic – Australia’s ‘deliciously ugly’ chocolate bar – was met with a fair amount of scepticism.

Maybe you had to grow up with it.
