National Geographic Traveller’s photo contest winners

Capturing scenes of natural beauty and expressions of human emotion from around the world, the winners of National Geographic Traveller’s prestigious photography competition have been announced.

This year, UK photographers were invited to submit their entries in one of six categories including action, nature, people, urban, portfolio and video.

London-based Italian-born photographer Renato Granieri won the grand prize of a six-night wildlife photography tour in eastern Europe with his striking image of two king penguins touching beaks in South Georgia.

In the other categories, an image of dog sledding in Svalbard, Norway, by Stuart Dunn took the top place for ‘action’, while a hungry dog poking its nose through a cafe window in lower Manhattan by John White won in the ‘urban’ division.

When it came to ‘people’, Simon Morris’s unusual portrait of an eagle hunter drinking tea at home with his eagle on one side and his pet cat on the other, impressed judges the most.

The winning shots were displayed at a gallery in Covent Garden, London, and have been published in a coffee table-style photo book. Scroll down to preview a selection of these awe-inspiring images…
