Arsenal ace Jack Wilshere misses Man City clash with ankle injury

Jack Wilshere missed Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat by Manchester City on Thursday night after suffering a ‘little pain’ in his ankle, according to Arsene Wenger.

The Gunners midfielder played the entirety of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final loss to Pep Guardiola’s men, but was absent from the teamsheet at the Emirates.

However, Wenger believes Wilshere should be fit for this weekend’s visit to Brighton despite being a ‘bit short’ during their final training session.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of kick-off, Wenger said: ‘He’s not available tonight. But we’ll be sure that he has a chance to be available for Sunday [against Brighton].

‘It’s a little pain in response. He played two games and gave a lot on Thursday and Sunday and he was a bit short yesterday [Wednesday] in training but he should be back on Sunday.’

Wilshere, who was pictured training in the snow at London Colney on Wednesday, would have been desperate to make amends for Arsenal’s poor display at Wembley.

On Monday he issued a statement on Instagram claiming that two of City’s goals should not have been allowed to stand and that Guardiola’s side should have been reduced to 10 men.

Wilshere wrote: ‘Hard to put into words my emotions about yesterday.

‘City are a good team and deserved to win yesterday. Alot (sic) of people have had thier (sic) say on us and we have to accept cristism (sic) when we loose (sic). That being said I can’t accept some of the decisions that went against us yesterday.

‘What ever (sic) you say about the first goal, its (sic) a foul. The second goal is offside. There should have been a second yellow in the first half.’

However, Wilshere’s team-mates could not make up for the defeat as first-half goals from Bernardo Silva, David Silva and Leroy Sane earned the visitors another comfortable win over the Gunners.
