A skywriting plane painted the sky over Mardi Gras celebrations in Sydney on Saturday with a message saying ‘Jesus Saves’.

The gigantic message was crafted into the sky around 5pm as revelers took part in festivities for the 40th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

While some were disheartened by the attempt to cast a shadow over the parade , others saw the funny side that Jesus would be coming too.

As Sydney’s famous Oxford Street bursts with colour, music and an enormous amount of glitter, more than 12,000 people take part in this year’s Mardi Gras parade.

Saturday’s event is expected to attract a record crowd of nearly half a million people as organisers look back on defining moments in the event’s history.

‘Mardi Gras remains a platform for social justice and equality and an incredible citywide celebration of our LGBTQI communities,’ chief executive Terese Casu said ahead of the party.

About 200 floats made their up the famous strip from 7pm, including a huge group of 250 people who were involved in the original 1978 demonstration and subsequent riot.

More than 1000 police officers were taken on to keep a close eye on party-goers.

The huge security operation also involved strategically parked vehicles, an intelligence crew, mounted police, the riot squad and sniffer dogs.
