A military investigator who drugged his wife and tried to suffocate her with his gloved hands while their child slept in the next room has been jailed for nine years.

He then offered her a massage and, while she was lying on their bed, put on his motorcycling glove.

Riddle then persistently tried to suffocate her with his gloved hand but she fought him off and ran out of the house where she screamed for help after cutting her foot on broken glass.

The former soldier handed himself in to Maroochydore police where he said he had assaulted his wife.

Justice David North said his remorse was nothing but ‘crocodile tears’ and that he had planned to use his skills as an investigator to hide the premeditated murder.

He said Riddle’s wife was suffering from PTSD and had not forgiven him.

Riddle’s lawyer said he was a decorated soldier and co-operated with police, reported Caboolture.

Riddle was jailed at Brisbane Supreme Court for nine years for attempted murder on Friday.
