Storm Emma recedes leaving lashings of rain and a carpet of fog

Britain will be lashed with icy rain while fog will carpet the nation as the Beast from the East and Storm Emma recede, leaving chaos in their wake.

The Met Office does not plan to lift its yellow warning – advises taking caution and taking into account possible travel delays – until the early hours of tomorrow morning when the last of the treacherous ice and snow dumped by Storm Emma finally melts. 

Temperatures have shot up across the country, with London and the south east hitting a balmy 8C (46.4). Much of the south is expected to hit 10C (50C) over the next three days – a return to the temperature expected in March.

Today, some parts of the country were entirely free of snow. But in some places the white stuff lingered as temperatures failed to shoot up as predicted. 

The whole of the country will be carpeted with a blanket of fog each night until late next week, This means poor visibility and drivers are advised to take extra care when taking to the roads.

Glasgow and Aberdeen will see temperatures rise to nearly normal levels of about 6C (42.8) or 7C (44.6) and by mid week most of the snow left in city centres will have melted away.

Fifteen flood warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency, most of which are concentrated in Cornwall and the south west of England.

It has also issued a flood alert for the Thames riverside by Putney Bridge in London, which is at risk of flooding if the river continues to rise under heavy rain fall.

Tonight, Wales and the the west of England and Scotland will remain windy, with wintry showers lashing central and north Scotland. In the south west and Wales heavy rain will bring rumblings of thunder.

Tonight, more heavy rain moves in in the wake of this weeks weather bomb. Kent, London and East Anglia) should expect heavy fall. After night falls, ice and wintry showers are expected. In the early hours the yellow warning is expected to end.

Fog will descend and sit overnight, causing problems for Monday rush hour commuters, especially around London and Kent.
