  • Foreign Secretary is understood to have received the gash while playing tennis
  • Noted tennis fan Mr Johnson said to have decided to back Brexit while playing

Boris Johnson was spotted with a painful injury on his face today after a mishap on the tennis court.

The Foreign Secretary had a prominent gash on his nose when he visited the BBC World Service studios in London.

The big red weal was apparently the result of an incident while he was playing tennis over the weekend – although aides were remaining tight-lipped about the exact cause.

Mr Johnson was pressing on with his duties despite the injury

The pair once faced off against each other publicly for an Olympics event in Trafalgar Square in 2011 – although there was no decisive outcome.

In 2014 Mr Johnson complained that he had taken his racket to Chequers in the hope of a showdown but Mr Cameron turned him down. ‘He said there was something wrong with his leg. I think he was worried,’ Mr Johnson joked.

The former PM is believed to have been out of the country and not Mr Johnson’s opponent over the weekend.

Mr Johnson is reputed to have made his decision to back Brexit during the 2016 referendum while on the tennis court playing against sister Rachel.

The injury over the weekend capped an unlucky few days for the Foreign Secretary.

He had been due to return from a visit to Hungary in time to attend the PM’s crucial Brexit speech on Friday.

However, heavy snow meant he was stranded and could not make it back.

Instead Mr Johnson posted a photo of himself posing in front of his RAF plane holding a copy of the speech, and giving the thumbs up.
