Carina Gross on how an acid can keep you looking younger for longer

Magic isn’t often a word associated with skin – most women usually opt for terms like ‘tired’, ‘grey’ and ‘puffy’.

But resident skin expert at Belaméres, Carina Gross, says that one particular acid found naturally in our epidermis can certainly live up that phrase – and can easily shed a decade off your skin’s age if protected.

‘I believe hydration is the key. We are born with 100 percent levels of hyaluronic acid but by the time we turn 40 there is only 50 per cent left and by 60 there is 10 per cent,’ she tells Daily Mail Australia.

‘In order to look youthful we need to keep that profile up as high as possible. The acid is connected to our collagen levels and cells – so if you’re looking for radiant skin this is the “fairy dust”.’

Skincare companies like The Ordinary have cottoned on to the all-important acid and have started producing potent serums to enhance your naturally occurring levels of the magic dust.

But Carina believes that ultimately there are things women can be doing ‘on the inside’ to help stop your depleting supply of hyaluronic.

‘I think people are under the impression putting a moisturiser on is a one-stop fix for giving you gorgeous, glowy skin, but it’s not true,’ she reveals.

‘The moisturiser does nothing else but stop trans-epidermal moisture loss – your skin can still be dehydrated even if you’re putting something onto it.’

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a lubricating, clear substance that’s produced by the body naturally.

In the human body, hyaluronic acid is found in the greatest concentrations in the skin, inside joints, within the eye sockets and in other tissues where it helps retain collagen, increase moisture, and provide elasticity and flexibility.

Caffeine amplifies your cortisol levels, which is a stress hormone, and negatively impacts your bodily systems when taken first thing.

Alternatively, exercising as soon as you’ve lept out of bed is prone to leaving the body with a dewy sheen and can be seen (begrudgingly) as a better option.

‘I recommend a non-invasive low level laser treatment over something like a hot laser. They’re quick and extremely effect at stimulating the acid levels under the surface,’ she continues.

Depending on your skin type will also depend on which makeup products will heighten the look and feel of your face.

‘If you have oily skin a slick of mineral makeup is a great option, particularly because it lets your skin breathe, but for drier skin types that kind of product will only make it appear sallower,’ Carina explains.

‘Dry skin types are usually better to use BB creams to lock hydration in.’
