Do you see faces in things? How objects look oddly human

Have you ever had the feeling you are being watched? Or think you’ve seen a face in an inanimate object? Well good news, this is a fairly common thing and has even been given a name by psychologists.

Pareidolia is where the mind ‘imagines perception of a pattern or meaning where it does not actually exist’, according to the World English Dictionary.

Famous cases of Pareidolia include the notorious house that looks like Adolf Hitler in Swansea, the Face in Mars photo from 1976 and the face of Jesus appearing various forms, such as a tortilla.

Now people who have spotted faces in unusual objects have shared their photos on Twitter.

Some highlights of the images include a crashed car which appears to be smoking, a ghoulish face inside a tree and a clown in a pot of granola with yoghurt.

WHAT IS PAREIDOLIA?

Pareidolia is the psychological response to seeing faces and other significant and everyday items in random stimulus.

It is a form of apophenia, which is when people see patterns in random, unconnected data.

There have been multiple occasions when people have claimed to see religious images and themes in unexpected places.

On the red planet, one of the most famous is the ‘face on Mars’ spotted by one of the Viking orbiters in 1976.

This was later proven to just be a chance alignment of sand dunes.

TAKE THE TEST TO SEE IF YOU CAN SEE FACES IN INANIMATE OBJECTS

In a study of 2,000 people, UK firm Lenstore has uncovered a number of trends among those who see faces in everyday objects, revealing women and religious people are more likely than others to experience the sensation.

Lenstore has also released an interactive experience called Making Faces, so anyone can test their pareidolia sensitivity.
