Grandmother is thrown into the air and killed by speeding BMW driver

This is the horrifying moment a grandmother-of-seven was thrown into the air and killed after being hit by a speeding motorist.

Sue Gravel, 63, was on her way to do some shopping when the BMW 5 series struck her and sent her flying into the air after it sped around the corner.

The footage was released in a fresh appeal to catch Sue’s killer and shows the car careering around a corner just as Sue crossed the road.

The impact of the car sent the grandmother flying eight to ten feet in the air before landing on the road as the driver fled.

Sue’s family are hoping that by releasing the footage it will motivate someone to come forward and identify her killer.

A year on from the awful incident in the Stainforth area of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, on March 11, 2017, her family have spoken of their pain over Sue’s loss.

Sue’s sister Val Buchanan said: ‘It was very difficult for us all to see the footage because we know she has been killed.

‘We know it was a hit and run but to actually see the footage is heartbreaking.’

Val had been decorating her house and looking forward to showing it off to sister Sue when a police officer turned up to deliver the devastating news shortly after the incident last year.

She said: ‘I went to the scene and Lucy the police officer asked somebody to identify Sue so I said I would do it.

‘It was awful to see her laid there – she looked just like my mum laid there.

‘We really want to get justice so that my sister can rest in peace – she is resting but not at peace until we get justice for her.’

Sue’s son Philip Gravel said: ‘Actually seeing your mum die is something you never want to see.

‘I just hope that this person has not done it to anyone else and no-one has to go through what we have had to go through.

‘It’s been sleepless nights and you find other things to do because when you are just sat there it’s on your mind all the time.

‘Any information people have, no matter how small, fetch it forward because if it was your family you would want others to do exactly the same thing.’

Acting Insp Richard Hunter, of South Yorkshire Police, said the vehicle was not stolen but was using fake number plates.

The BMW had been seen driving in Stainforth and Insp Richard Hunter believes answers to the investigation lie in the area.

Anyone with any information should phone police on 101.
