World-famous jockey falls from his horse and lies unconscious

A world famous jockey has suffered a sickening fall leaving him unconscious at a Sydney racecourse.

Hugh Bowman lay motionless on the ground after falling in front of a huge crowd on live television at the Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday.

He miraculously escaped with just minor concussion and mild abrasions to his hand and foot after having appeared lifeless for 60 seconds on the track.

The jockey of horse ‘Winx’ rode won 120 races last season and is widely regarded as one of Australia’s best big race jockeys.

Renowned commentator Bruce McAvaney reacted with relief to the news Bowman suffered no major breaks.

‘We’ve been told he’s off to hospital probably with concussion, maybe a tooth or two, we don’t know about that for sure,’ he said on Channel 7 television.

‘But no big breaks and that’s good news.’

The Australian Turf Club tweeted: ‘Reports that Hugh Bowman has suffered mild concussion and mild abrasions to his hand and foot but great news that his scans are clear.

‘Thanks again to course Dr John Saxon who was on the scene in less than a minute.’ 

Medical professionals helped him on the track and he was rushed to hospital by ambulance.

A steward said: ‘He’s obviously a little sore and sorry but appears to have had some loss of consciousness for a short period of time,’ he said. 

Hospital scans have reportedly cleared him of serious injury.
