Woman, 73, charged with murder following man’s death in Dunstable

Neighbours living in a quiet cul-de-sac have spoken of their shock after a 73-year-old woman was charged with murder.

Pensioner Angela Ayre appeared in court today accused of killing a man in his 50s who is thought to have lived at her home in Dunstable, Befordshire.

She was remanded in custody at Luton Magistrates Court.

Her neighbours in Redfield Close, where she lived in a neat semi-detached house, described her as a frail, ‘lovely lady’ who was unsteady on her feet.

One woman neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, said: ‘She is a lovely lady. Everyone liked her. She was always very polite.’

Another neighbour said: ‘Angela must have lived in the close for around 45 years – ever since the houses were first built.’

Neighbours said her marriage to her husband had ended years ago, with the pair splitting up.

Angela had been living at the property with the man, who is believed to be the victim, for around 5-6 years.

A woman neighbour said: ‘He was always changing his jobs or being made redundant and I think he was a bit of a drinker.’

Neighbours said the couple ‘kept themselves to themselves.’

Angela was often seen going to and from her local shops pushing a shopping trolley and she was described as being unsteady on her feet.

It was on Thursday morning that the police arrived in the close following reports ‘of concern for the welfare of the man at the property.’

An ambulance crew attended, but police said the man, who was aged in his 50’s, was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Angela Ayre was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning and subsequently charged with the man’s murder.
