Oleg Cassini launches gowns inspired by fashion royalty

Oleg Cassini, who was born in Russia and passed away in 2006, is widely regarded as the creator of modern bridal gown and designed dresses for the likes of Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

So when the iconic American bridal designer’s affordable high-end gowns were brought to Australian shores in 2017, thousands of brides-to-be across the nation breathed a sigh of relief.

As a result, brides have been able to walk down the aisle feeling like princesses in gowns that in some cases cost less than $1,000.

Here, FEMAIL looks at some of the affordable Oleg Cassini designs inspired by some of the classic and timeless wedding dresses of Jackie O, Princess Diana, the Duchess of Cambridge and Crown Princess Mary – and they start from just $549.

JACKIE O KENNEDY’S WEDDING DRESS

When Jackie Kennedy walked down the aisle in 1953 for her wedding to then-senator John Kennedy, she blew guests away. 

The one of a kind gown was designed by Ann Lowe in just 10 days after the original, which took two months to make, was lost in a fire. 

The dress was beautiful ivory silk dress featured a large skirt, portrait neckline and wax flowers and is one of the most iconic dresses of all time.  

Despite the gown making headlines around the world, according to Instyle Ann Low charged Jackie just $500 for the dress (it was worth triple that).

PRINCESS DIANA’S WEDDING DRESS

The then Lady Diana Spencer ensured all eyes were on her when she walked down the aisle at her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981. 

The dress was worth more than AUD $16,000 at the time and was made with ivory silk taffeta, 10,000 pearls and antique lace. 

While the gown, which was designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, will never be replicated, Oleg Cassini took inspiration from the full and voluminous skirt and is descrived as a ‘contemporary version’ of Diana’s gown.

The effortlessly elegant wedding dress worn by Princess Mary of Denmark when she married Prince Frederik in 2004 was made with ivory duchesse satin and featured a simple scoop neckline. 

Designed by Danish designer, Uffe Frank, the dress was inspired by vintage designs and had a slim waistline bodice, fitted sleeves and large pleated panels around the skirt. 

Oleg Cassini’s A-line scoop neck wedding dress has been inspired by the Princess’ simple gown and takes its cues from the clean satin finish.

Rumoured by some to have been worth between $300,000 and $400,000, the Duchess of Cambridge’s iconic gown designed by Alexander McQueen and Sarah Burton has inspired thousands of copycat designs around the world.
