It has been a miserable season for Manuel Neuer but despite missing most of the campaign with injury the German goalkeeper could make a timely return for the World Cup.

It is the sight that Bayern Munich and Germany fans have been waiting for most of the season to witness as the 32-year-old was pictured in training with the German champions.

Neuer was seen practising his handling and general goalkeeping skills as he nears a return to action.

The club stated that the goalkeeper specific session was the first completed by the stopper for the first time in over half-a-year.

Neuer has not featured for club nor country since the middle of September when he played the full 90 minutes in Bayern’s 4-0 win over Mainz.

After breaking his left foot last April, the keeper suffered a set-back to the same foot in a training session shortly after, forcing him into surgery. Initial estimates claimed Neuer would be out until January.

But recovery time has proved slower and he is set to complete a full return ahead of the final four league games of the season.

Germany’s No 1 is targeting to get back to full fitness for this summer’s tournament in Russia, where he will hope to lead out the defending champions in his role as captain.

His replacement at club level in Sven Ulreich has managed to fill the void well, with Bayern on the cusp of winning the German top flight for the sixth season in succession, needing just one more win from their final six games.

The German giants are also on the brink of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, after winning 2-1 at Sevilla in their first leg tie away from home in the last eight
