The moment ‘obliterated’ swimmer Clyde Lewis nearly collapses on the pool deck during an interview

Australian individual medley swimmer Clyde Lewis gave everything he had to represent his country and himself with honour overnight, taking home a gold medal.

Lewis smashed his own personal best time to take home the individual medley gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

He had to be helped to the media podium after the race by a games volunteer and the 7 News interviewer Nathan Templeton knew right away Lewis was having some trouble, The Herald Sun reported.

‘Are you ok to stand up?’, he asked as Lewis approached and rested on the railing.

‘You’re about to faint, are you alright?’

Lewis was unable to speak more than single words at a time as he tried to catch his breath.

‘Obliterated,’ he said.

Templeton then asked his staff to get a chair for Lewis and had him sit down for the remainder of the interview, which the swimmer must have appreciated.

One of the commentators said the lactic acid build up would have been extreme which would have played a big part in Lewis’ post swim condition.

In a show of sympathy for Lewis’ condition, Templeton cut the interview short to allow the swimmer time to recover.

‘Well done, mate. Absolutely sensational. We’ll get you some water. A bit of help. Catch your breath. Well done Clyde,’ he said.

After the medal ceremony Lewis repaid the understanding of Templeton and returned for a second go at the interview.

He said he could feel he had ‘red lined’ during the freestyle leg of the race.

‘I don’t remember much from that last fifty (metres),’ he said.
