- England suffered another miserable batting collapse as they were out for 184
- Alastair Cook was the only batsman to impress with his knock of 70
- Last wicket: Imam-ul-Haq lbw b Stuart Broad 4 (fall of wicket: 12 for one)
England will be hoping for a drastic improvement after being bowled out for a miserable score of 184 at Lord’s on the opening day of the Test summer.
Although Alastair Cook, equalling the record of Allan Border by playing in his 153rd consecutive Test match, returned to form with 70, his fellow top order batsmen failed to impress.
Mark Stoneman and captain Joe Root fell for just four, while Dawid Malan contributed six as Pakistan’s exciting bowling attack ripped England apart.
Though Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes offered some resistance, England’s last four wickets fell for just 12 runs on a green-tinged surface beneath overcast skies in the capital.
Hasan Ali and Mohammad Abbas each picked up four wickets as Pakistan demonstrated that another exciting crop of bowlers is emerging.
The tourists, heavy underdogs entering this two-Test series, finished the day on 50 for one in response, with Stuart Broad trapping Imam-ul-Haq before the close.
It was not the opening to the summer England wanted having suffered a disastrous winter Down Under, when they lost the Ashes series with Australia 4-0 and were also beaten by New Zealand.
