The Project’s Meshel Laurie reveals her true feelings about abortion

Meshel Laurie isn’t shy of expressing her opinions.

And It was no different for the mother-of-two when she spoke about the divisive referendum occurring in Ireland on abortion rights.

Speaking on The Project on Friday, the outspoken 41-year-old comic offered a surprisingly unique take on the polarising procedure.

‘I wish there was never another abortion in the entire world!’: The Project’s Meshel Laurie has revealed her true feelings on abortion following a discussion on Ireland’s referendum

Meshel’s comment came after co-host Lisa Wilkinson’s piece-to-camera about ‘repealing the eighth’, as the vote is known.

The comic, appearing emotional, started: ‘You know what I think gets lost in the abortion debate every time, is that nobody wants there to be abortion.’

Then starting to become passionate, she continued: ‘I wish there was never another abortion ever in the entire world…I hate the fact there is abortion.’

The Melbourne-based comic appeared to be touting the line from Bill and Hillary Clinton – that abortions should be ‘safe, legal and rare.’

Not being against a woman’s choice to get a abortion, the panellist then tired to clarify her position to her co-hosts and viewers.

It breaks my heart but that’s not reality,’ she started.

She then spoke of her concern for the women of Ireland, and how not having access to the procedure effects their every day life.

A number of women saying they are forced to fly to another European capital in order to undergo the procedure.

‘There are crisis pregnancies as they’re calling them in Ireland and I can’t help every woman, I can’t prevent them. If I could, I would.’

For a brief moment, host of The Project Waleed Aly interrupted the TV and radio personality, who is a self-professed Buddhist.

‘That’s not what the debate is about, right?’ he said.

Which prompted Meshel to reply: ‘No, it’s not. I mean, sometimes it has to happen. I wish it didn’t. Sometimes it has to.’
