Man, 33, charged with murder after elderly neighbour, 74, bashed with hammer Flinders Park, Adelaide

A man has been charged with murder after his elderly neighbour was found bashed to death with a hammer in a quiet suburban neighbourhood.

When emergency services were called to a home in Jellicoe Street, Flinders Park, in Adelaide’s inner-west about 6pm on Monday, they arrived to find 74-year-old Dion Hewitt already dead.

Neighbours said the Mr Hewitt’s wife ran into the street screaming for help during the brutal attack.

A 33-year-old man who lived down the street from Mr Hewitt, was arrested at the scene and charged with his murder.

‘I’m very upset because he was a great friend of mine, and it’ll hit me shortly,’ the man told Nine News.

‘I feel very upset to think that it could happen to a great friend of mine.’

South Australia Police are investigating the circumstances which led to the bloody attack.

‘The incident is not believed to be random and no other suspects are being sought by police,’ a police spokesman said.

The 33-year-old man is expected to front Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
