OAP, 86, is arrested over death of shopper in her sixties

A pensioner was arrested over the death of an elderly shopper after the car he was driving hit two pedestrians in a Sainsbury’s car park.

Police were called to the scene in Long Drive, Ruislip at 1.15pm on Saturday following reports of a collision between a car and two pedestrians.

A 64-year-old woman was taken to hospital with critical injuries. She died on Sunday morning.

The second woman, aged in her fifties, was discharged with minor injuries.

The driver, an 86-year-old man, was arrested for failing to provide a specimen of breath when asked, police said.

But after being taken to a police station and assesed, he was released under investigation.

The supermarket car park was sealed off and police enquiries continue.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said that the incident happened as the women were returning from shopping.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out to ascertain the exact cause of the 64-year-old woman’s death.

An inquest will be opened and adjourned later in the week.
