Welcome to the town of Cool in California

It was probably inevitable – there’s a town called Cool in California, the state known for its sun-kissed laid-back attitude and trendy inhabitants.

But just how cool the town of Cool is, is another matter. Some might argue that it doesn’t really live up to its name.

Located in the north of California, Cool is 40 miles from state capital, Sacramento, and has a population of just 4,100 people.

It was formerly known as Cave Valley before its name was eventually changed to Cool.

And these days it appears to be small quiet place with just one set of traffic lights on the main road.

Organisations that operate in the town include the Cool General Store, the Cool Lutheran Mission Church and even the Cool Beerwerks brewery and restaurant.

Meanwhile a 50 kilometre endurance race has taken place around the town since 1990 called ‘Way Too Cool’.

It’s unclear why the name of the town was changed to Cool, but one theory is that it was named in honour of Aaron Cool, a former local reverend.

However, it is not the only place that has a weather-related name.

In Utah, there is the city of Hurricane while in Texas, there is a small town called Rainbow.

Also in Texas is a Rains County while Florida has a town called Frostproof.
