A clueless French tourist casually rode his bicycle into one of Sydney’s busiest tunnels during heavy traffic.

The tourist can be seen on CCTV peddling a hire bike without a helmet into the Eastern Distributer tunnel.

The footage was captured by transport operators and released on 9News on Tuesday.

‘Our control room contacted him over the PA system asking him to move himself off to a safe place so we could come and pick him up,’ said Transurban Eastern Distributor Manager Louise Beer.

The man, however, ignored the instructions announced over the intercom and continued riding further into the tunnel and swerving dangerously close to traffic.

He slows down the flow of traffic as vehicles begin to queue behind him and eventually a vehicle is sent in to rescue him.

Authorities have issued a warning that it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured.

‘We are seeing an increasing number of rental bikes and food delivery cyclists,’ Ms Beer said.

The man was cautioned by police but let off without charge.
