Eleven dead and 25 trapped after an iron-ore mine exploded in China 

  • 11 people have been confirmed dead and nine other injured in Benxi, China
  • Deadly blast occurred when vehicles carrying dynamite exploded
  • 25 people are buried under the mine and authorities have sent out rescuers

Eleven people were killed and nine other injured after an iron-ore mine exploded in north-east China today.

The fatal blast struck the mine, situated in Benxi in Liaoning province, at 4:10pm local time, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.  

The report said 25 people are still trapped in the mine, which is run by China National Coal Group Co Corporation.

The deadly accident occurred when a number of vehicles carrying dynamite exploded, said CCTV.  

It’s said the vehicles were parked at the entrance of the well. 

CCTV station has also released footage showing a number of onlookers standing near the scene of the accident.

All of the injured people have reportedly been taken to the hospital. 

The Communist Party committee and the city government of Benxi immediately set up and sent rescue teams to the scene, said CCTV

The rescue effort is ongoing. 

Rescuers have got in touch with some of the people stuck in the mine.
