The shocking truth behind this photo: Shopper notices a cup of coffee on the floor of a Coles outlet

An outraged shopper has exposed the shocking truth behind cleaning habits of one of Australia’s largest supermarket retailers.

Sarah Smith took aim at her local Coles store in High Wycomb, east of Perth, and alluded to a rather concerning hygiene issue in a post to the store’s Facebook page.

The Coles customer noticed a stray McDonald’s takeaway coffee cup on the shop floor during one of her routine visits, and was horrified to see it still there a week later.

An outraged shopper has exposed a Coles supermarket for not clearing rubbish from its aisles after she noticed a McDonald’s takeaway cup stayed on the shop floor for an entire week

‘I’m a frequent shopper of your High Wycombe store, last Tuesday I saw this take away coffee cup on the floor, then I saw it still there on Thursday,’ she wrote.

‘You won’t believe how surprised I was when I saw it there again today so I snapped a photo of it for you. ‘

The eagle-eyed shopper then took the opportunity to suggest the retail giant replace the old, and no doubt moldy cup, with a fresh steaming brew in time for her next visit.

‘Hopefully it’s moved soon but If it’s still there for me to see at the end of this week could it at least be a nice fresh hot coffee?!,’ the cheeky opportunist wrote.

In a rather bizarre response from Coles, the person running its Facebook account wrote they would ‘escalate’ the issue with the appropriate store manager.

‘Hi Sarah, thanks for taking the time to get in touch. We’re disappointed to see this, and will escalate this with our store manager to follow up,’ the reply read.

Some social media users thought Ms Smith should have just taken the initiative and picked the cup up if it bothered her so much.

‘You could have just picked it up and chucked it. Yes, I know it’s not your responsibility, but it’s just a nice thing to do,’ someone wrote.

Another thought the whole situation was particularly comical, writing: ‘Hahahaha you crack me up..best post’.
