The ten pieces every woman should own – and what you need to banish from your wardrobe FOREVER

When it comes to a good wardrobe, many women worth their sartorial salt will know that a few good basics can go a long way.

But what should you invest in, should you be looking for a capsule closet?

Celebrity stylist, Rosie McKay – who has dressed the likes of Jesinta Franklin, Jessica Gomes and Kate Ritchie in the past – recently shared with FEMAIL the ten pieces every woman should have in their wardrobe, and what you need to banish forever.

‘If you invest in classics, they won’t date easily, they’ll mix and match into different outfits and will take you from desk to dinner with ease,’ Rosie told Daily Mail Australia.

So what are the pieces of clothing?

THE WHITE SHIRT

The ten pieces every woman should have in her wardrobe

1. A white shirt

2. A leather biker jacket

3. A black blazer

4. A pair of boyfriend jeans

5. A Breton striped top

6. A pair of white trainers

7.  A little black dress

8. Statement accessories

9. An iconic pair of designer shoes and a handbag

10. A pair of leather trousers

Beloved by celebrities from Elle Macpherson to Blake Lively, the white shirt is a perennial style choice Rosie reckons everyone should include in their wardrobe:

‘The most versatile of pieces, the white shirt will take you from the office to gthe weekend or dinner with nonchalant ease.’

She recommends looking to design details ‘like exaggerated sleeves or a nipped-in waist’ to add a personal twist.

THE LEATHER BIKER JACKET

Next on her list, Rosie said a leather biker jacket can assist any wardrobe insofar a it will ‘toughen up girly pieces like a lace or floral dress perfectly’.

If dresses aren’t your style, the stylist said you can also wear this with jeans and a white T-shirt.

Next on her list, Rosie said a black blazer (pictured) will take your wardrobe a long way - and it's worth paying attention to the details, like the shoulders, the lapels and buttons

THE BLACK BLAZER

As an alternative to the biker jacket, a black blazer will take your wardrobe a long way.

If you want to buy this, Rosie recommends again seeking out things to set your blazer apart – whether that be a jacket with strong shoulders, exaggerated lapels or ornate buttons.

Perfect for pairing with your black blazer, Rosie said a pair of boyfriend jeans (pictured) is a great and versatile addition to your wardrobe - as they can be dressed up or down

THE BRETON STRIPE TOP

Another classic that has been worn throughout the ages, Rosie explained that nailing nonchalant Parisian dressing is simple when you have a ‘humble stripe tee’.

‘Day or night, this is one piece that will keep your style on point,’ she said.

‘Pair with denim, white kicks and your leather jacket by day, or dress it up with leather pants, the logo belt, heels and a tailored blazer by night.’

How to shop well – and the tips to overhaul your style

1. Stick to neutral colours like white, black, nude, navy and red. These work well together and don’t date easily.

2. Add pops of colour that suit your personal style via your accessories.

3. If you’re looking to overhaul your style, go through your entire wardrobe and make three piles – Keep, Donate and Repair/Tailor or Dry Clean.

4. Reorganise everything you want to keep into style and arrange it by colour.

5. Drop off your donations, repairs and dry cleaning items. Sometimes an alteration like lifting a hem or removing a sleeve will breathe new life into an existing piece.

THE WHITE TRAINERS

Rosie also said that a simple pair of white trainers is a great addition to any wardrobe.

Wear them with anything, whether it’s a dress or slouchy pair of trousers.

THE LEATHER TROUSERS

While they may be expensive, the personal stylist said that a good pair of leather trousers is worth the investment.

‘Comfort is crucial with leather trousers, so the leather needs to be soft but the construction sound,’ Rosie said.

It’s worth spending a little more than your average purchase on these.

THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS

According to Rosie, an LBD is a ‘non negotiable’.

‘Take it to the next level by going for a strong silhouette,’ she said.

'My advice when it comes to shoes and bags is to try and save up and invest in one or two classic designer pieces,' Rosie said - as these can really elevate an outfit

ICONIC PAIR OF SHOES AND BAG

Lastly, when it comes to accessories, the stylist said you should pay a little more and buy a little less to have a truly great wardrobe.

‘My advice when it comes to shoes and bags is to try and save up and invest in one or two classic designer pieces,’ she said.

‘Why? Adding a designer shoe or bag to inexpensive chain store buys will always elevate your outfit to the next level.’

STATEMENT ACCESSORIES

The finishing touch for Rosie comes via statement accessories – whether that’s sunglasses, a logo belt or statement earrings.

‘Again, spend a little more on these instead of buying quick fashion pieces,’ she said.

WHAT TO BANISH FOREVER

When it comes to what you need to ditch, there are just three things Rosie said we need to forget about forever:

‘The handkerchief top and super-low hipster jeans need to go – 2000 we’re looking at you!,’ she laughed.

‘Finally, Ugg boots with anything other than pajamas are a no go for me.’
