Man and woman are charged with stabbing a teenage boy in the stomach as he left a Woolworths

A man and woman have been charged after a 16-year-old boy was stabbed in the carpark of a Balmain Woolworths on Thursday night.

Two teenagers, aged 16 and 14, had left the supermarket when they were allegedly confronted by a man armed with a knife.

After a verbal exchange, the man stabbed the 16-year-old in the abdomen, before leaving the area with a woman, police said.

About 4.30pm Saturday, police arrested a 29-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman at a home in Balmain.

The man was taken to Newtown Police Area Command and the female to Day Street Police Station.

Police say the attack occurred when the man questioned the teenager if he had a lighter. He allegedly began to stab the teenager when he responded no.

The victim suffered stab wounds to his abdominal area, severing tendons and piercing his liver. The victim also suffered broken bones in his hand when he pleaded to stop the attack.

He lay on the bloodied ground as the attacker allegedly fled the scene with the female accomplice.

The teenager was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital after being treated by paramedics at the scene.

He underwent surgery and is now in a stable condition.

One witness said was initially alerted to their screams but assumed the teenage brothers were mucking around.

‘Then I heard him call out ‘I’ve been stabbed! I’ve been stabbed! Help me!’ and I walked over and there was just blood all over the floor,’ she said.

The witness recalled the young victim’s confusion and shock following the brutal attack.

The car park was examined on Thursday night as investigator Inspector Gary Coffey called the stabbing a random attack.

‘It’s a pretty ferocious attack and it’s not normally something that would occur in this area, so we are very keen to speak to the victim once his condition improves,’ he said.

On Friday, Anthony Bell, Leichardt Police Area Command Acting Superintendent, called the attack: ‘swift and unprovoked,’ the Daily Telegraph reported.

‘Obviously all involved parties including the families are traumatised by this event,’ he said.
