  • Last year 41,000 people were caught using their phones while driving
  • Authorities will be testing cameras to catch people using phones on the roads

New laws could see Australian drivers lose their license for touching their phones while driving.

The NSW government has increased the penalty from four to five demerit points in a bold move designed to deter drivers who continue to use their phone while driving.

‘We see people on their phones, holding their phones, checking their messages it is inappropriate and it is illegal,’ said NSW Roads Minister Melinda Pavey.

‘If you think about long weekends or double demerit periods you could actually be at risk of losing your license,’ Ms Pavey said.

Last year 41,000 people were caught using their phones while driving.

Next year that number is likely to increase as authorities will be testing cameras to catch people using their phone, similar to red light and speed cameras.

It has been estimated that for every two seconds a driver checks their phone, they travel 33 metres with no visual road awareness.
