Richard Bacon’s wife was today pictured wearing both their wedding rings to hold his hand in a poignant photograph as he revealed how his health is improving.

The ex-Blue Peter host, who was put in a medically induced coma earlier this month, posted pictures on Twitter and Instagram of his hand intertwined with his wife Rebecca’s from his hospital bed ahead of his expected release.

And it appeared she was also wearing her husband’s ring on her index finger.

He wrote on Instagram: ‘Today should be the last full day in hospital, unless I decide to walk home through Lewisham.

‘Every facet of my life would be worse without Rebecca in it. How will I ever thank her? I was in a coma for nine or ten nights total – I just learned.

‘That’s a lot of staring at your husband and his pipes. And a lot of worry.’

The 42-year-old fell ill while travelling to Britain from the US and was taken off a plane in a wheelchair before being admitted to Lewisham Hospital in South East London. On Monday he posted on social media saying he had ‘nearly died’.

In tweets which were later deleted he said: ‘So, I did six days straight in a coma. Been here another four since. It’s an (as) yet unidentified double chest infection.

‘I nearly died. At one point, as I was run down a hallway to ICU (an intensive care unit) at midnight, with a massive needle jammed in my chest – bit like Pulp Fiction – I thought, ‘This is it.’

He was full of praise for the NHS and Lewisham Hospital, tweeting: ‘Low on energy but I love and admire all the team Lewisham Hospital. Viva the NHS.’

The father-of-two, who lives in Los Angeles, was taken ill on a flight from the US to the UK earlier this month with suspected pneumonia.

After his condition worsened, hospital staff in London put him into a coma to allow his body to fight the infection. He awoke on Friday.

On waking up, he posted on Twitter: ‘Ha. I am alive. Or in Lewisham. Or somewhere between the two.’

The former 5Live presenter also shared a quote with his fans where he talked about the ‘meaning of love’ as he was inundated with messages of support by fans and famous faces.

Comedian David Baddiel replied: ‘Very much hope this is actually you tweeting this. In which case: welcome back’.

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker also asked him if he had ‘overslept’ and the presenter replied: ‘Yes, for six days straight.’

Fans welcomed him back and wished him a speedy recovery on social media.

One said: ‘I’ve never been so glad to see someone’s name on my timeline as I have yours. So good to see you! Take it easy and do as you are told to get you fully recovered xx’

Another said: ‘Welcome back. I had 7 days in an induced coma years ago after a serious RTA. It’s a tough thing to overcome. Hope you recover steadily and safely. Thank heavens for the NHS.’

A third tweeted: ‘Here’s to a speedy recovery. Glad you are back with us!’

The TV star was diagnosed with pneumonia on both lungs, a potentially dangerous inflammation which can be caused by a virus or bacteria.

He is believed to have secretly walked away from his hosting duties at Fox TV in Los Angeles, after moving to America with his wife Rebecca McFarlane and their children three years ago.

Bacon, who has Arthur, six, and Ivy, four, with his wife, had job offers in the UK and was planning to go in for talks before he was rushed to hospital, it was reported.
