Laura Garcia, 32, was one of five people killed by an as yet unnamed gunman in Bakersfield, California, on Wednesday. She was targeted in her home along with her father after the gunman killed his own wife and two other men
A 32-year-old mother is among the five people killed by a California gunman on Wednesday night in a deadly rampage which ended with him taking his own life.
Laura Garcia was killed in her home along with her father. They were the third and fourth victims; the gunman, who is yet to be named, had already shot dead his own wife and two men at a trucking company nearby.
After killing Garcia and her father, he hijacked a car from a woman who was traveling with her daughter.
He drove it to a nearby highway where he shot himself as police approached his car.
It remains unclear what motivated the killings and who the other victims are.
Police say that none of the shootings were random.
A Kern County sheriff’s deputy stands near an area where a shooting victim lies (right) on Wednesday in Bakersfield. This was the third person shot – a man who witnessed the gunman kill his wife and someone else and tried to flee but was gunned down
The spree began at 5.20pm at the trucking company (1) where the gunman opened fire, killing his wife.
Garcia had several young children. Her family paid tribute to her on social media on Thursday.
‘If everyone can keep my cousins kids in their prayers I’d really appreciate it! People are so cruel and you didn’t deserve this!’ her cousin Alondra Ortega said.
Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said the mass shooting had become ‘the new normal’ around the country.
‘Six people lost their lives in a very short amount of time. This is the new normal.’
Witnesses have told how after the first shots rang out, someone yelled in Spanish: ‘Policía! Policía! There’s a crazy man with a gun!’
Sheriff’s deputies are interviewing some 30 people who witnessed the shootings.
Investigators believe that the gunman acted alone. People were seen late Wednesday night crying in front of Bear Mountain Sports.
This was the scene outside the trucking company where the first shooting took place on Wednesday night
At a nearby home, two people were killed. The police presence for that killing is shown above
