A terrifying chemical reaction has caused severe breathing problems to 24 people at a city hotel. 

Paramedics and fire crews were called to the Pullman Sydney Hyde Park Hotel at 9:06am on Wednesday.  

‘There was a minor spill of a chemical spill it appears to be chlorine combined with hydrogen chloride creating a strong smell and reaction,’ a Fire and Rescue spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia. 

‘We are evacuating levels 20 and 21…firefighters are ventilating the area.’

Six asthmatics received urgent treatment as 10 ambulance crews continue to assist patients who complained about respiratory and eye problems.

A police spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia that police are at the scene assisting with vehicle and passenger diversion and inquiries. 

‘Police are currently on the scene as 24 people being treated and six taken to hospital,’ she said.  

‘There is no criminal element to the incident.’
