A father has been slammed after he was pictured swinging a tot in his arms just inches from the edge of a perilous 100ft sheer cliff.

The heart-in-mouth scenes involving a man in white t-shirt and shorts were snapped at Dawlish Warren, Devon, on Saturday.

The man can be seen lifting the boy, aged around five years old, and dangling him by his arms above a potentially fatal plunge to the beach below.

At one point the boy appears to recoil in terror and struggles to release himself from the man’s grasp.

The man then lifts him up again before walking off with a woman who was standing by during the shocking incident.

Eyewitness Ian Wilmott, 39, was stunned by the scene. He said: ‘I noticed the family approaching the far end of the cliffs and felt they were getting far too close to the edge.

‘But when the man started swinging the young child over the edge I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It looked like a crazily dangerous thing to do. It just seemed so reckless.’

The red sandstone cliffs along the stretch of coast between Dawlish and Sidmouth are susceptible to erosion and are notorious for landslips and cliff falls.
