I’m emigrating to Australia to escape the misery of my £148m Lotto win, says former postman

EuroMillions winner Adrian Bayford is selling his magnificent Georgian mansion and country estate to move to Australia because his jackpot win has left him miserable.

Former postman Adrian, 48, who scooped a jackpot of £148m in 2012 has instructed estate agents to market his house and 189 acres of parkland, fields and woods in Suffolk.

The lottery winner has also sold all his animals and is closing his two beloved record stores.

He has already sold off parts of his 38-house property empire. All his houses are in Haverhill, Suffolk.

His friends now claim that his fortune has left him feeling increasingly isolated and he no longer feels comfortable even going out for a beer.

Villagers in Suffolk, on the other hand, believe that Adrian is getting fed up with all the hard work needed to maintain his Grade Two listed seven bedroom mansion and all his land.

The news comes as his ex-wife Gillian has put her spectacular £735,000 waterfront home overlooking the River Tay, near Dundee, Scotland, on the market.

According to the Sun, Adrian feels that ‘everyone wants a piece of him’ locally.

The father-of-two’s love life has also suffered and he has been divorced by his wife and dumped three times since his jackpot win.

He now believes that a fresh start in Australia is best for him.

A friend said: ‘Basically Adrian has had enough and he has the money to change his life – so he is. He woke up and found himself in this life that he didn’t want.

‘Adrian was never about Range Rovers, horses, sheep, chickens and paddocks and stables. He’s a rocker for goodness sake. He’s probably more interested in biting the heads of chickens rather than feeding them.

‘Then when his ex-wife remarried earlier this year I think he realised he needed to do something.’

The friend added that Adrian will now focus on spending time with his two children.

They also said that Adrian wants to settle down and has been hurt by his bad relationships.

However, the friend admitted that those close to him are worried about Adrian’s fresh start and are concerned by ‘how far he’s taking it’.

The friend claimed that Adrian has even been ignoring his oldest friends and hasn’t told them where exactly he will be moving to.

Adrian’s estate includes a farmhouse, four cottages and a three bedroom staff annexe, as well as stables and paddocks for horses and livestock.

Larger than life Bayford paid around £6.5million for his rambling country home and his land shortly after his big win in 2012.

He was still with Gillian when he moved to the house, just seven miles from their former three bedroom home in a cul-de-sac in Haverhill, Suffolk.

It was reported at the time that Adrian may have delivered letters to the mansion when he worked as a postman before setting up his own business selling second hand records and CDs.

But he and Gillian, a former care assistant, split up 15 months after their big win and later divorced, citing the stress of dealing with their massive windfall.

He remained in the house which dates back to 1815 and stamped his fun-loving personality on the property, installing statues of knights in shining armour in the grounds.

Visitors to his house at Christmas were also greeted by a huge Father Christmas figure which he put in his hallway.

One of the two driveways is still flanked by outsize stone statues of a pair of wild boars.

Earlier this year it was revealed that Bayford was keeping his own herd of shaggy-haired Highland Cattle on fields in front of his house.

He has also hosted the Cambridge Rock Festival in the grounds of his home for the last two years. The fully renovated mansion is being sold by the Cambridge office of leading estate agents Strutt & Parker.

A member of staff at the firm confirmed that the house was going to be sold, but added that sale details still had to be drawn up.

The fully restored house has marble fireplaces in its reception rooms, with full length sash windows and high ceilings.

Previous sales figures describe it as being ‘complemented by arable, woodland and grassland forming an impressive backdrop ad allowing a high degree of protection and privacy.’

A painter and decorator’s signs are currently outside the entrances to the house, suggesting that Adrian is giving it a last minute spruce up before buyers look around.

Father-of-two Bayford has had a turbulent love life with two failed romances since his divorce.

A villager said: ‘It is fair to say that the house has mixed memories for him as his personal life has been a bit of a roller coaster since his win.

‘It is a wonderful place to live, but the house needs a lot of work done on it constantly to keep it in shape.

‘We have been told that he simply wants to downsize and lead a slightly simpler life. It seems he wants to make a new start somewhere.’

Adrian faced heartbreak in January last year when his stable girl fiancée Samantha Burbidge, 30, walked out on him.

She reportedly took horses and a luxury horsebox that he had bought her during their romance so she could indulge in her horse riding hobby.

He was then reportedly dumped last May by former Frankie & Benny’s waitress Lisa Kemp after she allegedly found intimate messages he had sent to his former chauffeur Marta Jarosz.

A close family friend of Marta who is married and lives in Haverhill denied at the time that she had ever been in a relationship with Bayford or that she had received any messages from him in recent years.

Earlier this year, MailOnline revealed that Bayford had reopened his old music shop that he used to run in Haverhill.

Bayford, who is a big rock music fan, began his second hand music career by selling old CDs on a market stall more than 20-years-ago.

He later opened up the Suffolk Music Centre in Haverhill town centre, selling music and memorabilia.

He was on his way to work when he bought his winning ticket from a nearby newsagents in August, 2012.

But he later closed his shop after reportedly becoming fed up with abuse from people coming in and demanding money off him.

He held a closing down sale in the run up to Christmas 2012, charging customers £20 for up to 20 second hand CDs or film DVDs.

He got back into the retail business when he opened a film, music and memorabilia store called Black Barn Records in Cambridge in April, 2016.

He then bought the freehold of his old shop in Haverhill, and reopened it as another branch of Black Barn Records this summer.

Following his marriage split, he invested heavily in property and set up his own buy-to-let property empire through a company called St Just Housing.

Companies House records confirm that Bayford is in overall control of St Just Housing and latest accounts reveal it has assets worth nearly £10.2 million.
