Volunteers in Kansas City, Missouri were left reeling Sunday evening after The Kansas City Health Department ‘dumped food that had been prepared for the homeless.’

An organization called ‘Free Hot Soup,’ that brings food and clothing to Kansas City’s homeless community, told KCTV5 News that the health inspectors had dumped out the food, that included bean soup, and told them to leave.

Jennifer McCartney, who volunteers with ‘Free Hot Soup,’ said she was shocked when police and health inspectors showed up at Ilus Davis Park where they were serving meals.

Some of the homeless, who have benefited from the free food, said they are dependent on meals like those given out by ‘Free Hot Soup.’

‘It lifts you up and makes you feel like you can make it,’ said Paul Spicer, a ‘Free Hot Soup’ recipient.

A health department official told KCTV5 the group was serving improperly prepared food without a permit. They shut down all three locations where McCartney and other volunteers were working.

‘They told us we could throw away the meals or they would do it,’ McCartney added.
