Andy Murray was likened to Henry V by his mum Judy in the immediate aftermath of his four-hour epic against Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round of the Australian Open.
Having dropped the first two sets, Murray fought back valiantly, showing incredible heart, grit and desire as he forced the match into a fifth-set decider.
In the end his hip injury took its toll and while he lost the final set 6-2, the crowd and fans watching around the world hailed his bravery and determination in the face of adversity.
The mock-up image of Murray as the former King of England was captioned: ‘Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.’
Henry V ruled in the 15th century and had a famous portrait produced by Japanese-born American contemporary painter Kinuko Yamabe Craft during his reign.
Designed by tennis fan and artist Nial Smith, the two-time Wimbledon champion’s head has been super-imposed on to replace the historical king and fans raved about the photo.
One user wrote in response to Judy’s post: ‘That was truly amazing today. You must be so proud. His passion and determination is second to none and when watching him play it is like you are rooting for your own Son.
‘So emotional. Hope he will be back. He is simply THE BEST.’
Others thanked Murray and his family for the memories while ardent tennis supporters are left hoping he will make a sensational return Down Under in 2020.
It remains unclear if the defeat to No 22 seed Bautista Agut is his last match in professional tennis with a decision to be made on whether to have hip surgery ‘in a week or so’, he confirmed in his post match press conference.
The plan was to carry on for a homecoming at Wimbledon in the summer but any operation would likely end hopes of an appearance at SW19 in a playing capacity.
