A mother has told of her guilt after her severely dairy intolerant son found her secret stash of chocolate and ate it, leaving him in a coma in hospital.

Aisha Vaughan had to watch as her son, Omar, three, was put into a coma to save his life.

Omar found the plastic bag of treats under his mother’s bed at home in Wembley, northwest London when she was on a rare outing with friends and father, Curtis, looked after the kids.

Aisha Vaughan’s severely dairy intolerant son Omar, pictured in hospital, had to be put into a coma after he had a reaction to eating chocolate he found stashed under his mother’s bed

Speaking to the Daily Star on Sunday, Mrs Vaughan, said: ‘Seeing our baby hooked up to a ventilator left me in floods of tears.

‘This is my fault, I thought, tormented by the sight of Omar in pain.’

The 34-year-old told how her son immediately began choking and struggling to breath after finding eating the Wispa Bites.

The parents were always careful with the boys after their extreme allergies were revealed.

The mother revealed that it is a daily toil living with the boy’s condition. She said that if dairy even touches the boy’s skin they suffer from nasty boils and hives.

Mrs Vaughan said that her ‘beloved’ chocolate was the only dairy item in their home.

She was on a rare outing at the cinema with her friends when disaster struck. The child was in the care of 38-year-old Curtis along with Omar’s siblings Isaac and Suraiyah.

Mrs Vaughan told how she received a text from Curtis saying: ‘Omar can’t breathe’.

Mrs Vaughan, left with Omar, was at the cinema with friends when she received a text from her husband Curtis saying her three-year-old son, right recovering in hospital, couldn’t breath

‘It was halfway through the film when I heard my phone beep. It was a text from Curtis.

‘He said, ‘Omar can’t breathe’. I gasped, immediately understanding he was having a reaction,’ she said.

She returned home to find her partner administering adrenaline to the little boy using an EpiPen. They tried in vain to help Omar as his eyes swelled and he struggled for breath.

They adminetred seven shots before going to A&E where doctors told the horrified parents that Omar needed putting in a coma to protect him while he battled the reaction.

Mrs Vaughan said she felt ‘sick with guilt’.

The boy was allowed to go home after three days, where 24 hours were ‘touch and go’.

The mother said she is still in shock and added that she ‘can’t believe’ that it was the pair’s ‘chocolate craving that nearly killed our precious baby’.

In August last year the pair had another child who is already showing signs of the same illness.

Recent figures suggest as many as two in every 100 children under four are allergic to dairy.
