Christian Eriksen relieved after Raheem Sterling’s goal is ruled out for offside

‘I must be one of the luckiest guys on the planet tonight’: Christian Eriksen relieved after Raheem Sterling’s goal is ruled out for offside following his error

  • Tottenham are through to the Champions League semis after beating Man City
  • Spurs lost the second leg 4-3 but won 4-4 on aggregate via the away goals rule
  • City appeared to have scored the winner in injury time but it was disallowed
  • Christian Eriksen had given the ball in the build-up to Sterling’s disallowed goal

Christian Eriksen has VAR to thank after the technology spared his blushes during Tottenham’s dramatic Champions League quarter-final second leg win at Manchester City.

Leading 4-4 on the away goals rule it looked like Tottenham had thrown it away in second-half injury time when Raheem Sterling ‘scored’ to make it 5-4 to City on aggregate.

However, VAR overturned the decision when replays showed that Sergio Aguero was offside in supplying the assist for Sterling.

And Eriksen was the most relieved player on the pitch after it was his error that led to City getting the ball back to score. However, Aguero was in an offside position when Bernando Silva attempted to play the ball.

‘I must be one of the luckiest guys on the planet tonight,’ Eriksen told BT Sport in his post-match interview.

‘I thought it was all over but It was a fun game. It was a rollercoaster. We gave them a lot but also got a lot – it was a weird game.’

Tottenham can now look forward to a semi-final with Ajax – a match that will see Eriksen face his former club. And speaking about that prospect the Denmark international can not wait.

‘After today we take a deep breath, it will be a fairytale to play them and fun to be back in the [Johan Cruyff] Arena again,’ he said.
