Tottenham’s early-hours wake-up call: Ajax supporters set off huge fireworks display outside hotel in Amsterdam in the middle of the night before Champions League semi-final (just like Liverpool fans did to Barcelona)
- Tottenham face Ajax on Wednesday in Champions League semi-final second leg
- Spurs squad were staying at the Hotel Amsterdam-Amstel on Tuesday evening
- Ajax fans set off fireworks outside the building in an attempt to disturb Spurs
Tottenham’s hopes of having a peaceful night on the eve of their Champions League semi-final second leg were dashed by mischievous Ajax fans on Tuesday evening.
Fireworks were let off in the early hours of Wednesday morning outside the Van der Valk Hotel where the Spurs squad were staying.
Huge rockets were launched from a nearby road, causing loud bangs with the intention of disturbing the Premier League side, who must overturn a 1-0 deficit if they are to join Liverpool in next month’s final.

This tactic has been used by other fans before. Liverpool supporters put on a similar display outside Barcelona’s team hotel on Merseyside earlier this week.
Whether the fireworks had any effect is unclear, but the Spanish champions were extremely sluggish at Anfield on Tuesday night as they lost 4-0 to exit Europe 4-3 on aggregate.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has told his players to enjoy Wednesday night’s semi-final.
‘I won’t prepare a speech,’ said Pochettino on Tuesday. ‘I will speak from the heart and tell them what I feel in the last minute.
‘It’s an exciting moment for us to be in a semi-final. We need to enjoy it and have more freedom to play and to start the game the way we want to start.’
